Border 2 Movie Review: Almost Thirty Years After Border Was One Of The Iconic War Films In The Indian Cinema, Border 2 Comes With Nostalgia, Patriotism, And Sky-High Expectations. Viewed Through The Same Lenses As The Original, Thus Led By Sunny Deol Along With Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, And Ahan Shetty, The Sequel Tries To Recapture The Emotional And Patriotic Setup Of The First- One That Works Only Partly.

Story
Border 2 Is A Film Of The 1971 India/Pakistan War That Follows Three Courageous Officers Namely, Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon, Major Hoshiar Singh Dahiya, And LT. CDR. Mahendra S. Rawat. Their Happy Meeting At A Wedding Is Suddenly Interrupted By The Call Of Their Duty Back To The Battle Lines.
The Western Border Is At Serious Risk Of Being Exposed Especially When The Indian Forces Are Mostly Engaged In East Pakistan. The Three Are On A Mission To Defend Strategically Important Areas In Rajasthan, Punjab, And Jammu & Kashmir When They Rejoin Their Old Leader, Lt Col Fateh Singh Kaler, To Fight A Retreating Enemy.
The Movie Combines The Motifs Of Brotherhood, Sacrifice And Patriotism, But The Emotional Reward Is Rather Uneven.
What Works In Positive
The Initial Half Is The Strongest Part Of The Film. The Path Of Competition To Indestructible Friendship Between The Three Leads Is Interesting And Well Flowed. The Emotional Backgrounds, A Little Humorous Element, And Music Are Incorporated Without The Imposition Of The Narrative.
The Appearance Of Sunny Deol Is One Of The Highlights- Full Of Nostalgia, Thunderous Dialogues, And Mass Appeal. The Interval Block, Specifically, Is A High That Provides The Biggest High To The Film.
Varun Dhawan Does Not Disappoint With Understated And Concentrated Acting, Convincingly Fitting The Role Of A Strict Army Officer And Avoiding Melodramatic And Hammy Acting.
What Doesn’t Work Negative
The Second Part Of The Movie Is Less Gripping, As Long War Scenes Are Unnatural And Dull. There Are Several Battle Scenes Very Similar To The Original Border, Which Are Not Very Many New Things.
The Action Scenes, Particularly Aerial And Water-Based Ones, Are Overloaded With Vfx, Which Does Not Work. The Film Cannot Replicate The Emotional Appeal That The Original Was So Memorable, Despite Having Superior Resources. The Second Half Is Weak And Carries The Story Down.
Technical Aspects
The Music Is An Appropriate Equal To The Patriotic Tone, But Other Technical Elements Are Not Doing Their Job. There Is A Poor Level Of Vfx, Editing Is Not Sharp, And Action Choreography Is Dated. Director Anurag Singh Is In Control Of A Watchable First Half But He Fails To Bring Something New To The War Drama And Is Overly Dependent On Tried And Tested Models.
Final Score Border 2 Movie Review
Border 2 Has The Burden Of A Legendary Predecessor Yet It Does Not Quite Live Up To It. Good Acts By Sunny Deol And Varun Dhawan Keep It Afloat, But Poor Execution Of The War And Poor Visuals Do Not Allow It To Fly.
The Movie Might Start Off Strong On Brand Equity And National Pride, However, The Lack Of Emotional Grounding And The Ineffective Second Part Might Bring To An End Its Long Term Success.
Final Rating: ⭐ 2.75 / 5
